2D Visual Arts

Whether you’re a dedicated artist or a student looking to explore the challenge and reward of creating art, the 2D Visual Art program has courses to develop and take you to the next level as an artist. You can explore contemporary and historical 2D disciplines, including Design, Digital Processes, Color Theory, Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking, and take classes for fun, as part of a transfer degree, or for your career.

Is the 2D Visual Arts program for you?

The 2D Visual Art program will offer you a chance to explore expression, visual literacy, creative thinking, and to take risks. You’ll experience the technical, physical and intellectual world of studio art. You’ll be introduced to the foundational principles of design, form and color, and be encouraged to explore your individual areas of interest. And, you’ll be able to explore your creative side, while preparing for a career or to transfer to a four-year institution!

When you’re ready to get started, just apply! Our Admissions office staff will guide you through the steps to enroll to get you started right. You can also contact Admissions with any questions you have about the college, to schedule a tour of the campus, or just to say hello. If you’re not ready to apply today, you can request more information on the program and we’ll get in touch to make a plan that works for you.

What will you learn in the 2D Visual Arts program?

Our courses will provide a foundation for future study in a variety of art fields at Lane and other institutions. You’ll learn to:

  • Understand and apply color theory
  • Develop Visual Literacy
  • Explore a wide variety of materials and processes
  • Think creatively and solve visual problems
  • Analyze art-forms from around the world
  • Develop visual perception
  • Express ideas in visual form

Our courses will help you prepare for a career in Fine arts, Media Arts, or Graphic Design, and also build the strong, foundational experience that will make you successful if you choose to transfer to a four year school. Whatever your future, the 2D curriculum will develop your creative thinking and visual literacy in a global world full of images. You’ll experience the history and importance of the arts in human culture, and explore self-expression and self-awareness; ultimately making use of the creative process to enrich the quality of life, now and into the future.

What can you do next?

Our students have used the aesthetic, conceptual, and creative skills they’ve learned in the Visual Arts at Lane to transfer to top tier art schools such as CalArts, Maryland Institute of Art, PNCA, The Art Institute of California, Cooper Union, and Chicago Art Institute and more! After enrolling at Lane, you’ll work with your advisor to develop a transfer plan that works for you.

If you’re interested in transferring to the University of Oregon or Oregon State University, you’ll be able to take advantage of our articulation agreements and transfer guides. If you’re not sure where you want to go after Lane, talk to the arts advisors! They’ll help you navigate your options and find the right path for your goals.

Visual Arts alumni have gone on to become successful local, regional and national artists, earned teaching degrees, become art therapists, tattoo artists, started their own businesses, and more. Even if you don’t plan to major in art, our classes will help you develop problem solving skills, self confidence, self awareness, and a life-long appreciation and involvement with the arts.

Visual arts credits can also fulfill part of an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree. The AAOT will help you transfer to a four-year institution to earn your degree and launch many career options. Because the AAOT is a transfer degree, you’ll take a wide variety of classes in math, science, arts & letters, and more, preparing you for junior level status at most Oregon four-year schools.

Personal attention from engaging faculty

To develop as an artist, it’s important to receive individual feedback and critiques. At Lane, your visual arts classes will usually consist of 16-23 students, providing you with the opportunity to work closely with your instructors and receive meaningful critiques. All of your arts classes will be taught by active professional artists who consistently work and exhibit in local, regional, national, and international galleries and public installations.

Get to know the 2D Visual Arts faculty and advisors

The faculty and advisors for the program can help you meet your career goals. They can answer any program specific questions you might have, and help you find opportunities outside of the classroom. Advisors will help you schedule your classes and plan for the future. You’ll work with them to create a term by term planner that meets your needs and goals to ensure you complete your degree. And if you’re planning on transferring to a four-year school they can help you take the classes you need to count towards your bachelor's degree.

State of the art facilities

Our expansive, dedicated art spaces are housed in buildings 10 and 11, with large, designated studios for traditional design, color theory, drawing, painting, and a new digital fine arts lab where you can explore and expand your digital fine arts practices! Building 10’s industrial cement floor and exposed duct work lends to natural inspiration and a blank canvas for all of our art classes. Lane’s main campus also lends itself to natural inspiration, with forested hills, wetlands, and miles of trails for you to explore.

Within our two art galleries, we curate student art shows and exhibitions from nationally recognized artists throughout the academic year. All shows are free and open to the public, and give you the opportunity to explore and learn from renowned artists without stepping outside of the campus. We also offer many visiting artist lectures, workshops, performances and residencies for students to enjoy year round.
