Lane’s dynamic Music program is designed for students who are planning be a music major at a four-year institution, students looking to grow as performers, and anyone trying to enrich their life with music. Our classes can help you progress in your AAOT degree, but they can also prepare you for a career as a professional performer, recording artist, music teacher, music producer, sound engineer, music therapist and more.
Do you have a passion for music? Are you interested in music theory, music production, performing, and more? Lane’s Music Program has what you need! From beginning music classes to advanced, audition-only courses, you will find your place in our program with room to grow.
We offer a complete range of lower-division (freshman and sophomore) courses in music, everything needed by students intending to transfer to a four-year college or university and major in music, and by students intending to meet their needs entirely at Lane, with or without a degree.
This curriculum is designed for the student who intends to complete requirements for an Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree and transfer to a four-year university with a major in music. When you’re ready to get started, just apply! Our Admissions office staff will guide you through the steps to enroll to get you started right. You can also contact Admissions with any questions you have about the college, to schedule a tour of the campus, or just to say hello. Music Technology and Sound Engineering
A new degree is now being offered, Music Technology and Sound Engineering. The music technology associate of applied science degree is designed to meet the training and experience needs of new college students, current industry professionals and artists who work with recording equipment, recording studios, and music technology equipment. The program also includes a robust emphasis on musicianship, including one year of music theory, lessons and performance experience. This AAS degree covers essential skills used in the audio world and provides hands on experience with state of the art hardware and software. The experience and skills will allow graduates to more easily attain positions in the industry or assist them in starting their own small businesses. The foundation of musicianship and music theory will also allow motivated graduates to further their studies at a number of universities and colleges that offer music technology or electronic music undergraduate degrees, such as University of Oregon and Northwest Christian University.

Interested in learning a new instrument or don’t have one of your own? Students who take part in one of our ensembles or study an instrument can check one out from our department at no cost!
You’ll develop your musical potential at Lane through individual lessons, participation in music ensembles, classroom study, and more. Our program provides music majors with a solid foundation of core classes (music theory, sight-reading/ear training and keyboard skills), private lessons, and ensemble experiences to help them understand the responsibilities, personal integrity, and work ethic required to become well-rounded musicians, successfully transfer to four-year institutions, and succeed in the field.
Through our classes both in-person and online, you’ll learn to:
- develop your skills as a musician
- improve your sense of ensemble music making
- develop your inner musical ear
- apply music theory and analysis to music making
- understand musical style and the rich history of various musical genres
Performance Opportunities
Outside of the classroom you’ll find many opportunities to perform and show what you’ve learned. Whether you’re interested in joining one of our many music ensembles (some of which work and tour with renowned guest artists!) or performing in our Student Showcase concerts, you’ll be able to use what you learn in class on stage.
Whether you’re planning on transferring to a public or private four-year school, Lane’s music program will help prepare you for what’s next! When you complete your AAOT degree at Lane, you’ll transfer as a junior at any Oregon public university. Through our articulation agreement with the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, if you receive a “B” or better in our core music classes you’ll be able to seamlessly transfer into the next sequence at UO. Looking to move out of state or go to a private school? Many students have transferred to their dream program at schools across the country!

Lane offers students the best of both worlds: a wide variety of courses to choose from and small class sizes. At Lane, you’ll never take a class with more than 40 students, and your class will always be taught by an instructor, not a grad student. Our attentive faculty have real world experience, and they bring those experiences to the classroom. Within music courses, most of your classes are capped at 25 students, so you’ll get the personal attention you deserve and get to know your instructors on a first name basis.
Our experienced faculty of instructors are all active as musicians and professionals in the larger community. They are dedicated to helping you improve as a musician so you can meet your career goals, and they can help you find opportunities outside of the classroom!
Advisors will help you schedule your classes and plan for the future. You’ll work with them to create a term by term planner that meets your needs and goals to ensure you complete your degree. And if you’re planning on transferring to a four-year school they can help you take the classes you need to count towards your bachelor's degree.

Our music programs are housed in the performing arts building (building 6), home to our Performing Arts programs, multiple performance theatres, individual practice rooms, specialized classrooms and more! Some of our specialized music spaces include:
- The Recording Studio provides a tracking room large enough for 24 musicians, an isolation booth for singers, drums or cabinets, and a large Control Room filled with the tools of the trade.
- The Music Resource Center provides reference material, music theory tutorial software and a large library of recordings and listening materials for Performing Arts students. The Music Resource Center also provides one-on-one tutoring for students within any music classes!
- The Music Technology Lab is one of the most highly developed and integrated Music Technology Labs in the nation! You can explore MIDI music production, audio recording and editing with an integrated software application, movie soundtrack creation and sync, mixing, digital effects, software plug-in signal processors and instruments all to help you explore the engineering and technical sides of music.
In recent years, our ensembles have earned regional and national recognition for excellence! The Lane Chamber Choir was invited to perform with the Grammy Award winning ensemble Room Full of Teeth in 2016 as well as share a concert with the world renowned choir, Cantus in 2018. The Lane Jazz Ensemble earned top honors at the Reno Jazz Festival in 2013 and recognition as the Best Community College Jazz Ensemble in Downbeat Magazine’s Student Music Awards in 2015.
