Whether you’re planning to transfer to a college or university as a music major, seeking training in music technology and commercial music production, looking to improve your skills and knowledge as a performer, or just want to enrich your life through music, the Music Technology and Production program offers courses to help you achieve your goals.

Lane’s music department is a unique educational experience that combines traditional musicianship and music theory classes with modern music technology and recording studios. Because of this, you’ll get a well-rounded, individual education for a fraction of the cost of most schools! In our custom-built, multi-room studio, you’ll have the opportunity to produce your own professional quality recordings and projects with a variety of artist and creators across genres.
Through our MIDI and Audio Engineering classes, you’ll learn all about multiple DAW environments, mixing and mastering techniques, signal processing, editing audio, MIDI sequencing, analog and digital signal routing, synthesizer basics and synthesizer patch creation. You’ll learn to hear and appreciate the tonal qualities of a variety of high-quality microphones and outboard studio gear.
Through recording classes, music theory classes, lessons, and performance opportunities you’ll learn to collaborate with musicians, recording engineers, and other audio professionals. As a student in the audio engineering program, you will have a chance to visit local studios and production facilities and establish professional and personal connections with the top industry professionals in the Willamette Valley. Your theory and performance classes will develop your as a musician, improve your sense of ensemble music making, develop your music ear, understand the rich history of musical genres, and help you apply theory and analysis to your work.
Throughout the program you’ll have individual access to computer stations, software, hardware and professional quality music equipment. Your program will be more than just theory, as you learn every day on the same tools you’ll need to start a successful career. Lane offers students the best of both worlds: a wide variety of courses to choose from and small class sizes. At Lane, you’ll never take a class with more than 40 students, and your class will always be taught by an instructor, not a grad student. Our attentive faculty have real world experience, and they bring those experiences to the classroom! Because of our small class sizes, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know your instructor on a first name basis.
Your second year will have even smaller class sizes, with more opportunities for hands on, one-on-one instruction and feedback. You will have reserved studio time each week for completing lab course work and personal projects. Through both years of your program, you’ll have access to any of the 20 Audio Production Workstations in the MIDI lab, as well as an independent mixing and mastering studio.
Our experienced faculty of instructors are all active as musicians and professionals in the larger community. They are dedicated to helping you improve as a musician so you can meet your career goals, and they can help you find opportunities outside of the classroom!
Advisors will help you schedule your classes and plan for the future. You’ll work with them to create a term by term planner that meets your needs and goals to ensure you complete your degree. And if you’re planning on transferring to a four-year school they can help you take the classes you need to count towards your bachelor's degree.

By carefully picking which classes you take, you can add a Career Pathways Certificate to your degree. These certificates can help you stand out, and tailor the degree to your interests! You can also pursue the one-year certificate in MIDI Production and/or the two-year certificate in MIDI and Audio Production on their own. If you decide to come back to complete the two-year degree in Music Technology & Production, your courses from these certificates will count towards your degree, making your next step seamless.
You can earn either a:
- One-year certificate in MIDI Production (20 credits), which develops familiarity with MIDI software, MIDI hardware, and foundations of music production including basic audio production concepts such as file management, mixing, and basic recording, or a
- Two-year certificate in MIDI and Audio Production (39 credits),which builds upon MIDI Production foundations with training in audio recording and editing software, hardware and techniques, including advanced audio production concepts such as creating audio for video, microphone techniques, mixing, and basic mastering.

Our music programs are housed in the performing arts building (building 6), home to our Performing Arts programs, multiple performance theatres, individual practice rooms, specialized classrooms and more! Some of our specialized music spaces include:
- The Recording Studio provides a tracking room large enough for 24 musicians, an isolation booth for singers, drums or cabinets, and a large Control Room filled with the tools of the trade.
- The Music Resource Center provides reference material, music theory tutorial software and a large library of recordings and listening materials for Performing Arts students. The Music Resource Center also provides one-on-one tutoring for students within any music classes!
- The Music Technology Lab is one of the most highly developed and integrated Music Technology Labs in the nation! You can explore MIDI music production, audio recording and editing with an integrated software application, movie soundtrack creation and sync, mixing, digital effects, software plug-in signal processors and instruments all to help you explore the engineering and technical sides of music.
