April 10 Update

Please join us forour next series of planning forums, starting this week, where we will be looking at our current budget development principles, criteria and data elements and asking the following questions:

1) How can we update or improve the standard data elements used for program or service assessment and budgetary analysis?

2) How can budget development principles and criteria be stated, organized and applied to support clear, transparent, consistent budgetary decisions?

3) How can we develop meaningful systems and tools for strategically addressing basic budget scenarios (e.g. investments, reductions) at Lane?

NOW is the time for you to help us improve our decade-old structure.

Please join us at one (or more) of the three upcoming forums. Please also encourage your colleagues to attend.

Planning and Information Sessions Announced

Finance Council is developing a long-range financial plan—and we need your help! We are seeking the very best thinking within our campus community to both identify and address strategic issues and opportunities related to college financial planning and structures over the long haul. Please join us for one of the first series of planning and information sessions:

  • Tuesday, February 21, 3-5 p.m., CML 214
  • Friday, February 24, 3-5 p.m., CML 214
  • Wednesday, March 1, 3-5 p.m., CML 214

Please note that the ending time has been extended from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. to allow for discussion time. The final (March 1) session will be livestreamed, and provide access to an online, real-time discussion blog.

Session Agenda:

The focus of these sessions is to seek college-wide feedback around the questions (below), after a brief introduction, framing and orientation to the revenue and expenditure components within any long range plan:

  1. Welcome and Introductions
  2. Framing: Planning Principles, Planning Process, Planning Framework
  3. Revenue and Expense Components (overview of major elements)
  4. Discussion Questions:
  • What are we missing in our current modeling and analysis? How can we think differently about this?
  • What would an effective long-range financial plan and planning system do to both: best support your work in your department or division, and support the college’s strategic directions? What would it look like if we “hit it out of the park” with our long-range financial plan?
  • How will we measure and assess the effectiveness of our plan?

The Takeaway:

The Planning Subcommittee of the Finance Council will post information from these sessions online and encourage additional feedback and ideas through the conversation email(link sends e-mail) and website. This information will be analyzed and organized into themes to inform scenario planning, priorities and criteria college-wide.
