We are seeking a diversity of ideas, perspective and expertise to ensure the Learning Plan represents our collective best thinking and holistically serves our four core themes. Please email conversation@lanecc.edu if you are interested in being part of the Learning Plan Development subcommittee.

The Learning Council will continue its multiyear development process of the college’s Learning Plan into 2018/19. We ask that the campus community continue to engage in this work to ensure the plan represents our collective work and best thinking.

The Learning Plan will represent our collective vision for achieving excellence in our learning environment, the heart of our mission as a community college. Building upon strategic plans, assessment activities, and improvement initiatives, the learning plan will elevate learning as our prevailing guiding principle and provide a five-year framework for achieving objectives in support of our Core Themes: Responsive Community Engagement, Accessible and Equitable Learning Opportunities, Quality Educational Environment, and Individual Student Achievement.

The Learning Plan is intended to function at the institutional level, providing overarching vision, direction, and guidance to support strategic priorities, decision making and resource allocation. The plan will support the initiative of individuals, departments, and divisions as we work in concert to improve institutional capacity and fulfill our mission.

During spring and into 2018/19, we will be distilling ideas from extant planning documents and distributing drafts with the college community for feedback. We encourage open dialogue, discussion, and review. We expect multiple iterations of the plan before arriving at a synthesis that represents the best thinking of the college community as a whole. Please plan to engage with this work.

To encourage engagement, the Learning Plan Development Subcommittee will be visiting governance councils, committees, and college leadership, and hosting formal conversations for the college at large. We also welcome the opportunity to come to department meetings and other smaller groups to gather feedback. In addition, a website will host drafts and be open to comments throughout the year (see below.)

Learning Plan Characteristics

Excellence in teaching and student learning features five essential characteristics:

Quality: Develop and use the most effective and engaging learning pedagogies to produce relevant and meaningful learning environments and experiences.
Accessibility: Provide available, inclusive, and affordable education to all students.
Relevance: Create an alignment of educational needs, student choice, academic transfer, and professional pathways, with expertise and skills relevant to the community and the world.
Sustainability: Ensure a supported and stable curriculum that students, the college community, and partner institutions can integrate with present and future needs.
Evaluation: Provide infrastructure that promotes assessment of current educational needs, pedagogical and subject matter advances, and opportunities for improvement.

Learning Plan Purpose and Principles

Draft for discussion and dialog:

Unite everyone in the college around our vision for teaching and student learning.
Explicitly support core themes and core theme objectives.
Develop, support, and maintain high quality teaching and learning using effective and up-to-date content and pedagogies.
Provide accessible educational opportunities to support student success.
Meet the needs of a diverse student population toward the goals of equity and social justice.
Create and sustain a culture of inclusion, action, assessment, and continuous improvement.
Support and communicate the fundamental role of the community college in contributing to a strong democracy.
Provide strategic direction and guidance for all programs and services, and other institutional planning efforts.
Strengthen co-curricular, developmental, academic transfer, and professional technical education in order to provide structured, yet flexible systems and courses of study that:
- provide foundational skills when needed,
- foster intellectual curiosity and discipline exploration and
- emphasize a liberal education and essential skills in all programs of study.
Promote sustainable resource allocation and practices that will ensure stability that the college community, students, and partners can count on.
