Accounting

Accounting is the language of business, and Lane’s accounting program will prepare you to be an indispensable and discerning asset in your future career. Whether you’re looking to transfer to a four year institution, or directly enter the workplace, Lane will prepare you to reach your goals.

Is the Accounting program for you?

You’re interested in understanding how the the day to day numbers influence the monthly balance sheet. You understand the importance of long range thinking, financial strategy, and careful auditing. Your love for logic, organization and efficiency will help you navigate government and industry rules. This will help guarantee your business can focus on profit instead of getting lost in government regulation.

When you’re ready to get started, just apply! Our Admissions office staff will guide you through the steps to enroll to get you started right. You can also contact Admissions with any questions you have about the college, to schedule a tour of the campus, or just to say hello. If you’re not ready to apply today, you can request more information on the program and we’ll get in touch to make a plan that works for you.

What will you learn in the Accounting program?

Through our classes both in-person and online, you’ll learn to:

  • anticipate and actively explore innovative solutions to technological and organizational challenges.
  • apply critical thinking and analytical skills in decision-making and problem solving.
  • organize and manage the daily business functions of an organization.
  • understand professional ethics, legal standards, and organizational expectations.
  • prepare accounting statements and reports.
  • use research and analytical skills to support the activities of the organization.
  • use word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to manage and interpret information
  • apply accounting theory to analyze accounting information.
  • understand and monitor the financial, tax, payroll, legal, and other compliance requirements.
  • plan, budget, and evaluate financial performance.

With the option to take your classes online or in person, you have the flexibility to complete your degree the way that works best for you. Your instructors will help prepare you for your career with one-on-one attention in small classes, and if you need extra help outside of class you’ll have access to free tutoring through the Business Resource Center.

What can you do next?

If a business doesn’t have a strong understanding of money, it won’t last very long. With your accounting degree, you’ll help ensure a business will thrive. After receiving your degree, your career opportunities are boundless! Our graduates have gone onto careers in bookkeeping, tax preparation, payroll clerking, and more.

Or, use your two-year Associate of Science Oregon Transfer (ASOT) degree as a stepping stone to a four year program. You’ll be able to start as a junior at any Oregon public school! You can also take advantage of our articulation agreement which allows you to directly transfer to Northwest Christian University.

Personal attention from engaging faculty

Lane offers students the best of both worlds: a wide variety of courses to choose from and small class sizes. At Lane, you’ll never take a class with more than 40 students, and your class will always be taught by an instructor, not a grad student. Our attentive faculty have real world experience, and they bring those experiences to the classroom! Because of our small class sizes, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know your instructor on a first name basis.

Get to know the Accounting faculty and advisors

The faculty and advisors for the Accounting program can help you meet your career goals. They can answer any program specific questions you might have, and help you find opportunities outside of the classroom. Business advisors will help you schedule your classes and plan for the future. You’ll work with them to create a term by term planner that meets your needs and goals to ensure you complete your degree. And if you’re planning on transferring to a four-year school they can help you take the classes you need to count towards your bachelor's degree.

Get real world work experience

Employers are interested in more than just your degree. It’s important that you’re able to show that you have relevant, real world work experience. Our Cooperative Education department partners with local businesses and organizations to provide internships for students in their field of study. Many students even continue to paid employment at their former internship site. All Business degrees at Lane require three credits of Cooperative Education courses, so you’ll be well prepared for your career when you graduate!

Stackable Credentials

If you’re earning your AAS in accounting, along the way you’ll earn a one-year business assistant certificate, without taking any extra classes! This certification will propel you towards your accounting degree while also demonstrating you understand the functions of business to prospective employers.

State of the art facilities

Every business student at Lane has access to our Business Resource Center. This dedicated space offers business specific tutoring as well as instructor led study sessions for many of our classes. A computer lab just for business students provides you access to the software you’ll need to be successful.
