BioBonds

BioBonds

What is BioBonds?

BioBonds is a pair of classes taken together (corequisites) designed for specific health professions programs. It consists of:

  • BI 112 - Cell Biology for Health Occupations
  • CH 112 - Chemistry for Health Occupations

BI 112 Course Description (Corequisite: CH 112):
Introduction to human cell structure, function, respiration, and division. Includes genetic concepts of DNA replication, protein synthesis, genes, and inheritance. Laboratory skills: Use of microscopes, identification of cell structures. With CH 112, the prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology 1 (BI 231).

4.000 Credit hours
30.000 TO 36.000 Lecture hours
30.000 TO 36.000 Lab hours
Levels: Credit
Schedule Types: Lecture plus Lec/Lab (covers Lab requirements for AAOT)

CH 112 Course Description (Corequisite: BI 112):
*Prerequisite: MTH 052 or above with a grade of "C-" or better or pass a placement test.*

Introduction to atoms, states of matter, bonding, energy, acid/base and buffer chemistry, organic and biological chemistry including lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, proteins, and metabolic pathways. Lecture/recitation and laboratory. With BI 112, the prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology 1 (BI 231).

4.000 Credit hours
40.000 TO 48.000 Lecture hours
Levels: Credit
Schedule Types: Lecture

What is the prerequisite for BioBonds?

There is no prerequisite for BI 112. The prerequisite for CH 112 is Math 52 (MTH 052) or higher; certain score levels of Lane's math placement test also qualify. Review the BioBonds course description for qualifying test scores.

Who should take BioBonds?

BioBonds is designed for those students who are pursuing health programs such as nursing and dental hygiene. It is the prerequisite for BI 231 (Human Anatomy and Physiology 1) and may also be useful as preparation for taking the 200-level biology and chemistry courses that meet medical school admissions standards.
(At Lane, those sequences are: BI 211, BI 212, BI 213 and CH 221, CH 222, CH 223.)

*You must earn a "C-" or better in both BI 112 and CH 112 in order to meet the BI 231 prerequisite requirement.*

NOTE -- If you have taken prior biology and chemistry classes (at Lane or elsewhere), please compare them to the BioBonds course descriptions. If you believe you have learned the BioBonds course content in those previous classes and would like them assessed for equivalency, you may email your unofficial transcript (showing qualifying grades), course description, and syllabus to the Science Office for evaluation: ScienceOffice@lanecc.edu

Registration Information

These courses are designed for you to take together. Choose one pair and enter both CRNs in myLane before clicking "submit". Once registered, you may not drop either class without dropping the other class.
