The Writing Program and You
Whether you’re taking a writing class because it’s a requirement for your program or because you want to boost your communication skills, Lane has the right class for you. You can further explore your interest in writing by taking classes in Literature and Creative Writing!
You can get help outside the classroom through Lane’s Writing Center+, and get extra support with writing, multimodal assignments, presentations, and projects for any class. The Writing Center+ also offers help with scholarship essays, resumes and more. You don’t even have to come to main campus to get writing help! Through the online Writing Center+, you can get help with what you need at home by simply registering for the current term CRN (it’s free!).
Through our classes both in-person and online, you’ll learn to:
- Read and analyze college level texts
- Employ a flexible writing process
- Compose college level texts using various technologies and formats
- Use the Lane library as well as other research tools effectively
- Reference the ideas and research of others into your own writing ethically
- Apply your critical thinking skills to create projects and essays on a variety of topics
Being a successful writer is about more than being “good at writing.” Lane’s writing classes focus on helping you cultivate the reading, research, and planning skills you’ll use in future coursework and in your professional life. By learning to recognize the structure and defining features of different kinds of texts, writing courses provide a you with a framework you can apply to any writing task from cover letters to lab reports.
In the Writing Program, you’ll never take a class with more than 26 students, and your class will always be taught by a highly qualified instructor whose focus is on creating a positive learning environment and supporting you. This means that you will always have the opportunity to get to know your instructor and classmates. In addition, The Writing Center+ offers support from experienced peer tutors and professional Instructional Specialists in the Writing Center+, online, and even sends tutors into many writing classes.
The faculty and advisors for the program can help you meet your career goals. They can answer any program specific questions you might have, and help you find opportunities outside of the classroom. Advisors will help you schedule your classes and plan for the future. You’ll work with them to create a term by term planner that meets your needs and goals to ensure you complete your degree. And if you’re planning on transferring to a four-year school they can help you take the classes you need to count towards your bachelor's degree.
