Health Information Management (HIM) is a rapidly expanding profession in an exciting area of health care. As more healthcare data is collected, more HIM professionals are needed to manage and analyze it. Through our flexible, online program, we’ll train you to design and oversee health information systems while ensuring that they meet medical, legal, and ethical standards. You’ll also learn to improve efficiency in health care facilities by boosting efficiency in billing, analyzing patient data, and ensuring the integrity of electronic data through quality management and improvement.
Depending on your interests, Lane’s online HIM program offers multiple pathways to reach your goals! You could earn your Career Pathways Certificate in medical coding, your one year certificate in Health Information Management, or earn both while earning your two-year Associate of Applied Science degree! With both part and full time options, this online program offers a pathway to a meaningful career while working with your busy schedule.

To be successful as an HIM student, you must have good reading, writing, time management and study skills. Course materials, group activities, class discussions, and interaction with the instructor are primarily conducted via the internet, and it will be important for you to be familiar with emailing, creating and editing documents, and using discussion forums. Through our online courses and on-site internships, you’ll learn to:
- Develop knowledge of healthcare terminology and medical conditions
- Apply critical and creative thinking, problem-solving and effective inter-professional communication skills
- Electronically record data for collection, storage, analysis, retrieval, and reporting
- Evaluate patient records for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness of data
- Organize, input, process, analyze, secure and distribute healthcare information
- Work as a liaison between the healthcare providers and billing offices
- Assign standardized diagnoses and procedure codes to accurately meet reporting requirements in processing claims for insurance reimbursement
- Gain an understanding of dynamic healthcare delivery systems and regulatory environments
- Evaluate, use and integrate information technology to support medical decision-making processes
- Apply principles of healthcare privacy, confidentiality, legal and ethical issues as well as data security
- Apply quantitative and qualitative methodologies to process healthcare information
- Track patient outcomes, population health statistics, insurance reimbursement and conduct data analysis for quality assessment
- Develop skills and resources for research, leadership techniques, and project management
You’ll apply what you’ve learned through engaging classes to work in your local community. Every student is required to complete 3 credits of supervised instruction within healthcare facilities, where you’ll learn soft-skills and get job experience which will help you stand out as you prepare to start your career.
Lane offers students the best of both worlds: a wide variety of courses to choose from and small class sizes. At Lane, you’ll never take a class with more than 40 students, and your class will always be taught by an instructor, not a grad student. Because of our small class sizes, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know your instructor on a first name basis. Our attentive faculty have real world experience, and they bring those experiences to the classroom! Health Information Management is fortunate to have an active, engaged Advisory Committee to help keep faculty informed of changes in the field, and needs in the community.
The faculty and advisors for the program can help you meet your career goals. They can answer any program specific questions you might have, and help you find opportunities outside of the classroom. Advisors will help you schedule your classes and plan for the future. You’ll work with them to create a term-by-term planner that meets your needs and goals to ensure you complete your degree. And if you’re planning on transferring to a four-year school they can help you take the classes you need to count towards your bachelor's degree.

Employers are interested in more than just your degree. It’s important that you’re able to show that you have relevant, real world work experience. As a Health Information Management student, you’ll have the opportunity to complete at least one, three credit Cooperative Education internship through a partnership with a business or organization in your community. Many students even continue on to paid employment at their former internship site.
You can earn two different one year certificates as a part or independently of your Health Information Management AAS degree which help demonstrate your competency as a HIM professional:
- The Medical Coding Career Pathways Certificate prepares graduates to take an entry level coding exam either from AAPC or AHIMA.
- The one-year Health Information Management Certificate prepares graduates for employment in an entry-level position in a healthcare setting.
You can also elect to complete either or both of those certificates independently.
