COVID-19 Updates

Due to COVID-19, the Advanced Technology office will be closed in bldg. 15 room 201. Staff will be working remotely and responding to emails and phone messages on a regular basis. Please monitor the COVID-19 information page for all updates.

LaneAlert is an emergency notification service from Lane Community College to quickly inform students and employees about weather closures, delays or emergencies at Lane. LaneAlert messages are sent by text and sometimes email. Be sure your LaneAlert information is current in your myLane accounts! Also, check your Lane student email accounts for all college communications.

Lane Aviation Academy provides safe, professional flight training for pilots from Private Pilot through Airline Transport Pilot. KEUG airport in Eugene, Oregon is the ideal size for pilot training – not too big but with approach, tower, and ground controllers and airline service.

Lane's Flight Technology Program offers:

  • A two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Flight Technology degree which includes flight training for Commercial Pilot in single and multiengine airplanes with instrument rating. Additional training is available for Flight Instructor with ratings for airplane, instrument and multi-engine.
  • Flight training toward Private Pilot through advanced ratings to complement other education or career goals.

Flight training and ground classes are integrated so that you will start flying on the first day. Our fleet of dual controlled Piper and Cessna aircraft provide a safe flight training environment.

This program is approved by Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission. LCC Private Pilot, Instrument, and Commercial Pilot training courses are Part 141 approved by the FAA. Our tower-controlled, multiple-runway airport provides a rich training environment.

Flight training in Oregon provides a wide variety weather, terrain features and airport complexities. The Eugene area provides a safe environment for flight training in the clouds. The weather in Oregon provides clouds.

The weather is the best anywhere for safe instrument training in real instrument conditions. We fly in clouds. We offer Part 141 training for Private, Commercial, Instrument, a combined Professional Pilot course, and ATP Proficiency.

  • National openings: 10,620+ annually for commercial pilots, aircraft pilots and flight engineers, and airline pilots and copilots
  • Flight instructors earn from $25,000-50,000.
  • Entry-level airline pilots earn $35,000 through their probationary period.
  • Air carrier line pilots earn $45,000-300,000 annually.

Is the Flight Technology program for you?

The demand for air travel has increased exponentially over the past two decades. Even with cyclic economic challenges, the outlook is encouraging. What's driving this optimism? Several factors, including the following:

  • Global business community - Economists estimate that the demand for air travel will double in the next fifteen years.
  • Growth and restructuring in regional airlines - Consolidation of air routes among major carriers has inspired healthy growth among regional airlines offering well-paying positions. More airplanes means more pilot seats.
  • Rapid increase in retiring airline pilots - The current rate of retirements will accelerate over the next ten years.
  • Military cutbacks - Today, the Air Force is training less than 50% of the pilots they trained just five years ago. More non-military airline pilots will be needed.

Other information to consider:

  • It is required that applicants obtain a combination FAA Airman's Medical Certificate and Student Pilot Certificate prior to beginning the Private Pilot Airplane Course. This is a requirement to fly as a solo pilot. New pilots must obtain this from an Aviation Medical Examiner. Although you may become a Private Pilot with a 3rd Class Medical, we suggest that you apply for a 1st Class, which is required to operate as an airline captain if that is your goal.
  • U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements Title 49 CFR Part 1552 Flight Schools require that each flight school establish citizenship of all persons receiving flight training prior to instruction. This is required for training leading to initial privileges for Single or Multiengine Airplanes, or Instrument Rating.
    • U.S. citizens must provide documents verifying citizenship. A list of these documents will be sent to you with your acceptance letter to the flight program.
    • Non-U.S. citizens must receive approval from the Transportation Security Administration prior to flight training. This is a federal government process and requires some lead time. Please contact the Lane Community College, Flight Technology Department office as early as possible so we may assist you with this process.
  • In addition, applicants who are not U.S. citizens should contact the International Programs department for college enrollment information. International students must be accepted to the college before acceptance to the Flight Technology program.
  • No flights will be dispatched until the TSA has given their approval and/or documents have been provided as proof of U.S. citizenship. To access detailed information regarding this ruling and the TSA please visit the AOPA website.
  • The Flight Training program accommodates approximately 40 students a term. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date their application is received. You are encouraged to submit your application at least one term prior to your desired starting date. Aviation ground classes are open to all interested students enrolled in the college and do not require acceptance into the Flight Technology program.
  • Students are placed on the flight schedule on a first-come-first-served basis, only after:
    • TSA requirements have been met
    • Copy of FAA Medical Certificate is on file
    • You are registered for Flight Lab credits

You will be contacted regarding your enrollment status prior to the start of the term. Please notify the Flight Technology department whenever changes occur to your address or phone information so that we may update your application.

Planes acquired in 2014 - They may be small, but they're playing a huge role at the Lane Aviation Academy.


These trainers at the flight school, built in Oregon, are called RV-12′s, from Van's Aircraft in Aurora, Oregon.

The school bought them for $115,000, and say they're thrilled with the light sports planes' performance. In fact, instructors at the academy say students are learning to solo faster than larger, more traditional trainers.

"It's very responsive. And that's one of the fun parts about this airplane is that, yeah, you can do all the flight training, but it does have a lot of responsiveness," said Sean Parrish, Lane Aviation Academy flight instructor.
