ABSE offers instruction in the following subjects:

Mathematics - Courses in basic math skills cover a full spectrum of mathematics in every level. Topics include whole number operations, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, proportions, measurement, data analysis, metric units, square roots, exponents, introductory geometry and algebra.

Writing - Courses in English grammar will help students develop basic writing skills for use in employment or higher education. Sentence structure, organization of paragraphs, and essay writing skills will be covered.

Reading Improvement - Courses in basic reading comprehension introduce the student to critical thinking and analysis of written text. Topics include: making predictions, finding the main idea, drawing inferences, vocabulary development, identifying organizational patterns such as cause and effect, distinguishing fact from opinion, reading charts and diagrams.


Basic Skills

Fundamentals of Reading & Writing classes are for adult learners who need to learn or re-learn basic reading, writing and math skills in order to meet work, educational, or employment goals.

Reading and Writing for English Language Learners classes provide instruction in reading and writing for non-native English speakers. (Offered at the Florence location only!)

Beginning Math introduces and work with the concepts of fractions, decimals, percents, ratio & proportion, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and algebra using a problem-solving approach, worksheets, and computer tutorials.


GED Preparation

Advanced Math builds upon knowledge of fractions, decimals, percents, ratio & proportion, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and algebra using a problem-solving approach, worksheets, and computer tutorials.

GED Reading builds comprehension skills in reading for science, social science and literature.

GED Writing covers the organization of content, vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

GED Science and GED Social Studies explores the topics and background knowledge for GED success and also prepares you for success in college science and social studies.

College Preparation Courses

Adult Skill Development (ASD) courses offer structured classes in reading, writing and/or math to improve skills and increase college placement test scores.

College Preparation and Transition: These courses prepare learners who need to build or brush up on college readiness skills for postsecondary education, including math, reading, writing, and student success principles. Students learn how to successfully navigate the college system, explore career/degree options, practice time/self-management, while completing coursework aligned to credit level programs.
